This is a standard chart that can assist you in the process of choosing the right necklace or chain length. The sizes listed here are for the average-sized neck; for larger necks, choose one size up.


For just a general rule of thumb, the most stylish length of necklace chain would be two sizes, minimum, above your neck measurement. So while choosing the right necklace or chain length, use a measuring tape to find how many inches around your neck is, then add 2 to four inches to that. This will of course depend upon what the necklace will hold and where you want it to lay. Longer chains work best with pendants, crosses, or medallions.


Woman's standard necklace sizes

16 inches choker length
18 inches at collarbone
20 inches a few inches below collarbone
22 inches at or above neckline
24 inches below neckline



Man's standard necklace sizes

18 inches base of neck *(for smaller sizes)
20 inches to collarbone *(most common)
22 inches a few inches below the collarbone
24 inches just above the sternum
